Arte Lisboa – Contemporary Art Fair
From the 20th to the 25th of November, Arte Lisboa will be taking place once again for this year´s edition. This is Europe´s most important contemporary art fair that, and it will take place at the Lisbon International Fair at the Parque das Nações, next to the Taugus river.

Arte Lisboa has consolidated as a space dedicated to the promotion, diffusion and sale of contemporary art, and every year it gathers more and more people that are interested in art. The fair organizers initiated the project knowing that it wasn´t easy to attract a massive crowd, like most fairs require. However, persistence and the good times that Portuguese art is going through established Arte Lisboa as one of the activities that´s unmissable for the Portuguese public.
Today, the public sector is very interesting in supporting this initiative because it gives dynamism to another series of proposals that transform Lisbon and the whole of Portugal as an attraction point for the special interest tourism development, focusing mainly on art.
Its growing internationalization, which attracts gallery owners, critics, curators and art historians from all over the world, is proof that the Iberian Peninsula is a strong market for contemporary art. This year we will be able to see exhibitors from Germany, Mexico, Brazil, Mozambique, South Korea, and Spain among others.
Contemporary art is understood chronologically as the art that´s made by the artists that belong to our days. However, from the aesthetic point of view, it´s referred to the avant-gardes, those artists who get ahead of their times and revolutionize the conceptuality of art and their role in society.
And that´s why Duchamp is known as the father of contemporary art, since he signifies the concept of art and gives it the connotation of a communicative act between the artist, who takes a reality to symbolize it into an object and then conceptualizes it, and the spectator, who decodes it and re-conceptualizes it.
Although for many art is still just painting and sculptures, contemporary art takes all the available tools, from the sophisticated and latest technology to rubble and nature, including painting and sculpture in different ways, in order to carry out their work of art.
That´s why these exhibitions are so relevant for the artists, since this process that creation is searching for takes place in them: the meeting of the artist with the critic view of the public.
If to this furtive meeting between art and the public we add that it takes place in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, a city that has a rich cultural lifestyle inherited from a splendorous past in plastic arts and music, you´ll see why it´s a good idea to attend Arte Lisboa, an exhibition where you can get to know emerging artists and buy works that might be worth a fortune in the next few years.
Tickets for all publics cost 8€ and only students have a reduced fee, which costs 4€. The exhibition catalogue costs 20€.
