Lisbon Nights
Lisbon is a deceiving city which captivates its visitors: it is magical during the day and intense at night. The sunset promises a fun and exciting night. Late in the evening, the Chiado district coffee shops open their doors for the most impatient people. Actually, Lisbon is becoming one of the most influential European cities regarding nightlife thanks to its quality and variety.

The Barrio Alto is the traditional area for Lisbon nightlife. This is the Portuguese’s favourite quarter to begin the night, at 24:00 approximately. Two of its biggest attractions are the Fados along with some of the most charming bars of the city; all located in this area. The Barrio Alto neighbourhood’s narrow streets hold lots of tiny, packed bars. People usually pile into these places drinking and talking. The typical drink of the area is “the pretinha” or black beer, but they also consume “caipirinha” and all its varieties. The Barrio Alto bars close at about 4:00am. This is the moment to go to other nightlife areas!
The Alfama district is the most authentic in Lisbon. This offers a distinct atmosphere, full of curious places. Alfama is the fados’ birthplace and the best neighbourhood to listen to them. It is a bohemian area, full of old bars and clubs. To wander around its streets is the best way to discover these jewels of the Alfama night.
Much of the Lisbon nightlife has moved to the Docas de Santo Amaro (docks) neighbourhood, situated next to the Ponte April 25. This is the most glamorous area of Lisbon, but also the most expensive. This former industrial area plays host to the largest concentration of bars and discos in the city, suitable for all tastes. The Capital disco ((Avenida 24 da Julio, 68) and the Kremlin dico (Rua Escadinhas da Praia, 5) are the most famous. Another one is the Lux (Rua Gustavo Matos Sequeira, 42), owned by John Malkovich! The African club B.Leza (Conde Barão, 50) will delight fans of exotic ambience. There the best Afro-Portuguese rhythms are played, mixed with the most fashionable music.
Another good place to go is the Parque das Naçoes, the former Expo 98 fairground. A multitude of cultural and musical events are celebrated here although it is highly recommended checking beforehand if something is going on before making arrangements to get there because it is away from the Lisbon centre.
For those who prefer other night time activities, the Estoril Casino (Praça José Teodoro dos Santos Estoril) is one of the largest and most famous in Europe.
