Lisbon food - traditional Lisbon cod dishes

When we think about Portugal’s traditional dishes, without a doubt we think about cod. Roasted, baked, boiled or fried, the Portuguese are proud to say that they have as many recipes to cook cod as the numbers of Portuguese regions and that there are more than 365 ways to prepare this fish, one for each day of the year.

The Portuguese capital, Lisbon, has its own specialty, the « bacalhau Bras », made from cod, eggs, parsley, onions, potatoes and black olives. The Portuguese people never tire of this popular food. They usually share it with their family or friends, no matter what the occasion is. Tourists though, prefer cod fritters or cod cakes (made from potatoes, onions and cod).

In most tourist areas of Lisbon, like Chiado and Bairro Alto, are located the best Portuguese restaurants. They offer all the many different ways of cooking cod that you can imagine. And to make you feel hungry, the restaurants display in their windows, trays of cod fillets and cod steaks – you can even admire the biggest pieces of freshly caught fish. Do not miss the restaurants of the Rua do Arsena close to the Praça do Comercio.

But if there is one restaurant that specializes in cod, that’s “A Casa do Bacalhau”, which attracts politicians, stars of fado and all kinds of people to taste its delicious cod. It is located close to the Convento do Beato, in the east of the city. The owners have restored some old stables and turned them into a cod sanctuary. One of its specialties is the “bacalhau com pasta de azeitona”, a delicacy for the palate together with vinho verde (green wine).

¡To leave Lisbon without tasting its main specialty is a sin! Are you hungry ? Enjoy a perfect and cheap stay with these Apartments in Lisbon!
